Verdict: Arava first, Bergamot second; Yafo Suede for cooler days
Arava was my favorite of the collection, with Bergamot taking an easy second place. Yafo Suede also deserves recognition, particularly for how well its sandalwood worked for me during cooler weather.
Tekes provided this discovery set for review. This assessment is based on sample testing, which offers less scope than extended wear from full bottles. The overall 8.5/10 verdict is my personal assessment of the discovery set, not a weighted average of the individual samples. Individual sample scores are provisional.
This review covers the five samples I tested: Arava, Bergamot, Yafo Suede, Wild Rose, and Eversun. The individual sample scores are provisional, pending final editorial approval.
The scent profiles and approximate wear times below provide reference context for the compositions. They are not measured results from my sample wears and do not determine my personal ratings. Skin, application and conditions can change how a fragrance performs.
A discovery set should do more than introduce a handful of fragrances. It should give you a sense of what a house is capable of, how it approaches different scent profiles, and whether there's something in the collection that genuinely connects with your preferences.
That's what I enjoyed about exploring the Tekes Discovery Set.
Across these five fragrances, there's a surprising amount of variety. You'll find bright citrus, aromatic woods, warm vanilla, soft suede, floral elements, and darker resinous compositions.
While woody notes are a recurring theme, each fragrance brings something different to the experience.
Arava was my favorite of the collection, with Bergamot taking an easy second place. Yafo Suede also deserves recognition, particularly for how well its sandalwood worked for me during cooler weather.
Here's how the collection came together.
Arava | 9.2/10
My favorite of the discovery set.
Notes: Frankincense, Pink Pepper, Hinoki, Rose, Ambroxan, Vetiver, Sandalwood, White Musk, Amber.
Scent profile: Amber, woods, smoke, musk and balsamic warmth.
Wearing direction: The darker, resinous profile suggests cooler weather and evening wear.
Arava was the clear standout for me.
There's something about this particular combination of smoky, woody, and resinous elements that fits what I enjoy in a fragrance. Frankincense provides the smoky, incense-driven character, while hinoki and sandalwood bring an interesting dimension to the woody foundation.
The rose is an especially intriguing part of this composition. Rather than defining the fragrance as floral, it introduces a contrast to the darker elements.
Pink pepper adds a spicy dimension, while amber, ambroxan, and white musk help shape the warmer, smoother side of the composition. Vetiver introduces another earthy, woody element.
What I appreciate most is the overall direction. Arava has a distinctive personality compared with the rest of the collection, and its combination of woods, frankincense, and rose made it my personal favorite.
Bergamot | 8.8/10
An easy second place and one of the collection's most versatile compositions.
Notes: Bergamot, Marine Notes, Petitgrain, Green Tea, Frankincense, Freesia, Cashmeran, Musk, Cedarwood.
Scent profile: Woody, citrus, aromatic, floral and fresh spicy.
Wearing direction: Its brighter profile suggests daytime wear, particularly in spring and summer.
Bergamot came in a very comfortable second place for me.
At its core, this is a fresher, more aromatic direction for Tekes. Bergamot and petitgrain establish the citrus character, while marine notes and green tea introduce an interesting sense of freshness.
What makes the composition particularly appealing is everything supporting those brighter elements.
Frankincense adds a resinous dimension, while Cashmeran, musk, and cedarwood give the fragrance a warmer, more textured woody foundation. Freesia brings a soft floral component into the mix.
The result is a fragrance concept that goes beyond simple citrus freshness.
I enjoy fragrances that offer something interesting beneath their initial impression, and Bergamot has a combination of aromatic, marine, woody, and resinous elements that makes it stand out.
It was easily my second favorite of the set.
Yafo Suede | 8.5/10
Smooth leather, violet, and some particularly enjoyable sandalwood.
Notes: Violet Leaves, Pink Pepper, Leather, Violet, White Wood, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Amber.
Scent profile: Woody, powdery, violet, ozonic and aromatic.
Wearing direction: The profile has an airy violet side as well as a substantial woody foundation, with an autumn-leaning wearing direction.
Yafo Suede was another fragrance that I really enjoyed, especially when temperatures started getting cooler.
The sandalwood was the element that stood out most for me during those cooler days, giving the fragrance a woody character that I found particularly appealing.
The composition itself takes an interesting approach to the suede concept.
Violet leaves and violet introduce green, floral, and powdery facets, while leather provides the material character suggested by the name. White wood, vetiver, and sandalwood build out the woody foundation, with amber contributing warmth.
Pink pepper offers a little contrast to those smoother elements.
I appreciate how the notes create the potential for something both soft and substantial. It's a different direction from Arava's darker, frankincense-driven personality or Bergamot's brighter freshness.
For me, Yafo Suede is one of the discovery set's more memorable offerings, particularly because of that sandalwood presence in cooler conditions.
Wild Rose | 8.0/10
A spiced, woody interpretation of rose.
Notes: Black Pepper, Pink Pepper, Saffron, Frankincense, Cypress, Turkish Rose Absolute, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Amber.
Scent profile: Woody, warm spicy, fresh spicy, amber and rose.
Wearing direction: The spice and warm woods suggest evenings and cooler weather rather than a delicate, airy floral.
Wild Rose takes the collection into floral territory, but the supporting notes suggest something more complex than a conventional rose-centered fragrance.
Turkish rose absolute forms the floral heart of the composition, accompanied by black pepper, pink pepper, and saffron.
Those spicy elements give the rose an entirely different setting than a softer, sweeter floral treatment.
Frankincense adds a resinous direction, while cypress, sandalwood, and patchouli establish a greener, woodier foundation. Amber contributes another layer of warmth.
One of the things I find interesting about this discovery set is how Tekes uses rose in more than one composition without necessarily approaching it in the same way.
In Arava, rose provides contrast to the darker woods and frankincense. In Wild Rose, the floral element takes a more central role, supported by spice, woods, and amber.
It's a distinctive addition to the lineup and helps showcase the range of the collection.
Eversun | 7.8/10
Warm, approachable, and built around a softer citrus-vanilla profile.
Notes: Orange Blossom, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Warm Spices, Ambroxan, Tonka, Musk.
Scent profile: Vanilla, musk, citrus, amber and woods.
Wearing direction: Its warmer, softer profile suggests evenings in autumn and winter.
Eversun explores the warmer and sweeter side of the Tekes collection.
Orange blossom and bergamot give the fragrance a bright citrus-floral direction, while vanilla and tonka establish a softer, sweeter foundation.
Cedarwood and ambroxan contribute woody and ambery characteristics, with musk helping round out the composition. Warm spices provide an additional dimension that keeps the note structure from being entirely about sweetness.
Compared with the deeper compositions in the set, Eversun offers a more easygoing direction.
While my personal preferences leaned toward Arava and Bergamot, I appreciate the role Eversun plays in the collection.
It brings a different personality to the discovery experience and gives those who prefer warmer, softer fragrances another option to explore.
The Collection as a Whole
What I enjoyed most about this discovery set was the range of different fragrance personalities.
Arava immediately became my favorite, with its frankincense, hinoki, rose, and sandalwood creating the kind of darker woody composition I tend to gravitate toward.
Bergamot followed closely behind. Its mix of citrus, marine notes, green tea, frankincense, and Cashmeran gives it a completely different direction while maintaining an interesting woody foundation.
Yafo Suede was another highlight, particularly on cooler days when I found myself appreciating the sandalwood even more.
Wild Rose demonstrated how rose can work alongside spice, frankincense, and woods, while Eversun offered a warmer, sweeter contrast through vanilla, tonka, citrus, and musk.
There are recurring ingredients throughout the collection, but they're used in different combinations and contexts.
Frankincense appears in Arava, Bergamot, and Wild Rose. Rose plays a role in both Arava and Wild Rose. Sandalwood connects several of the compositions.
Those shared ingredients help create a sense of continuity without making the five fragrances feel interchangeable.
Final Verdict
Overall Discovery Set Rating: 8.5/10
For me, the discovery set is an easy 8.5/10. That is my verdict on the set as a whole, not an average of the individual sample scores. My testing was limited to the samples, which gives me less opportunity to assess each fragrance than a full bottle would.
The Tekes Discovery Set offers a well-rounded introduction to five different fragrance profiles, with enough variation to make sampling the entire collection worthwhile.
Arava was the clear winner for me, with Bergamot finishing a strong second. Yafo Suede also earned a place among my favorites, particularly because of the sandalwood and how well it worked during cooler weather.
Wild Rose and Eversun round out the collection with two very different personalities, one emphasizing spicy florals and woods, the other offering warmer vanilla and citrus elements.
Not every fragrance connected with me equally, but that's part of the appeal of exploring a discovery set.
My personal standouts: Arava, Bergamot, and Yafo Suede.
