One spray makes the statement. Two underlines it.

There are fragrances that politely announce themselves, and then there is Bijou Zafran. From the first spray, Ormonde Jayne's saffron-centered Eau de Parfum arrives with remarkable force. During one of my first wears, two sprays applied in my upstairs office could be detected downstairs and throughout the house. That was the moment I understood that this fragrance demands restraint.
The opening is led by warm, dry saffron and a beautifully contrasting pear accord. A metallic, mineral edge gives the saffron structure, while the fruit adds enough succulent brightness to keep the composition from becoming austere. Ormonde Jayne's official structure places saffron and pear at the head, cypriol, iris, and benzoin at the heart, then patchouli, musk, mineral amber, vanilla bean, and leather accord at the base.
What impressed me over repeated wears was the movement. The sharpest edges of the saffron-and-pear opening gradually soften as amber and resinous elements become more noticeable. Leather adds texture rather than aggression, while iris and musk create a powdery current beneath the composition.
Hours later, the fragrance feels considerably different from where it began. On my skin, the late drydown becomes primarily resinous musk with a soft trace of vanilla. The fruit has largely disappeared and the saffron has retreated, leaving something warmer, smoother, and more intimate. Bijou Zafran does not simply hold its opening for ten hours. It actually takes you somewhere.
Performance is exceptional. I get approximately ten hours of wear, enormous projection during the first several hours, and very strong sillage. Two sprays were enough to carry from one floor of the house to another, yet the fragrance remained clearly detectable long after the opening settled. For most situations, I recommend one spray. Two is the maximum I would suggest.
Unsolicited reactions have reinforced that impression. Bijou Zafran has repeatedly drawn attention, and people have asked what I was wearing. That matters because saffron, mineral amber, leather, benzoin, iris, and musk could easily become difficult. Instead, the result smells expensive, unusual, and deliberately composed without becoming inaccessible.
Although the fragrance is presented for women and men, I find it entirely comfortable in a masculine wardrobe. Its saffron, amber, mineral character, and leather give it enough structure to balance the pear and vanilla. It feels especially right beside darker tailoring, wool, leather, and evening wear, with cool autumn and winter air giving its projection room to breathe.
At 9.3/10, Bijou Zafran is an attention grabber in the literal sense. The scent itself earns a 9.0, while its performance and projection reach 10/10. It is warm, spiced, resinous, luxurious, assertive, and slightly mysterious. One spray carries the day. Two may announce you to the entire building.
