Silphium was the fragrance I appreciated more than I personally desired.
The Silphium sample featured here was provided to The Oakmoss & Ivy by Stora Skuggan for independent editorial consideration. No payment was received. Gifted product does not determine our conclusions, and the house did not preview or approve the score or review.
Silphium is a completely different animal from Fantôme de Maules. Where Fantôme feels green, airy, and easy to place in daily life, Silphium arrives with spice, resin, amber, and considerably more force.
Black pepper, ginger, clove, and cinnamon give the opening a strong pulse. Tobacco and geranium add body before frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood, and leather pull the fragrance toward something darker, warmer, and more ritualistic.
The supplied community reference places Silphium at 3.9 out of 5 from 497 ratings, with about seven hours of longevity and strong sillage. Its fresh-spicy, warm-spicy, amber, aromatic, and woody character explains why it feels denser and more insistent than Fantôme.
I respected the construction more than I personally craved it. At 7.9/10, Silphium is technically impressive and clearly distinctive, but it is less natural for my workplace and everyday settings than the greener ease of Fantôme de Maules.
That does not make Silphium a creative failure. Friends who gravitate toward incense, resins, ritualistic aromas, and darker atmospheric compositions responded to this side of the Stora Skuggan collection much more quickly than I did. The house seems less interested in pleasing everyone than in finding the particular person who understands each scent.
