Athenaeum taught me not to judge Jorum Studio from the opening.
The Athenaeum sample featured here was provided to The Oakmoss & Ivy by Jorum Studio for independent editorial consideration. No payment was received. Gifted product does not determine our conclusions, and the house did not preview or approve the score or review.
Athenaeum is another fragrance that taught me not to judge Jorum Studio from the opening. The combination of beeswax, ink, hay, lavender, honey, patchouli, and woods is unusual enough that the first few minutes can feel almost confusing.
Then it settles. Beeswax and honey begin smoothing the edges while lavender and woods emerge more clearly. Ink and flouve remain, but instead of feeling strange they begin contributing to something warm, scholarly, and nostalgic.
There is an old-library quality to Athenaeum. I do not simply mean books. I mean aged paper, polished wood, dust caught in sunlight, softened leather, and something faintly sweet lingering in the room.
For someone drawn to dark-academia aesthetics, there is a great deal to appreciate here. The fragrance becomes more coherent and inviting with time, without losing the odd details that make it memorable.
At 8.4/10, Athenaeum delivered one of the biggest drydown transformations in the Jorum selection. The opening challenged me, but what followed kept drawing me back.
